Our Story

In 1998 Tracy and Mike Walsh adopted Fido, a beautiful blue and gold macaw from a family that loved him very much but didn’t have the time to give him the attention they knew he needed. After two years of loving and caring for this wonderful bird, Fido lost a long and painful battle with Asperilligious. After much grieving Tracy and her husband Mike began looking for reputable parrot rescues in the Washington and Oregon area and found that the closest rescue at the time was in Springfield, Oregon. Mike and Tracy took the long trek to Oregon to take the required bird care class and returned again to bring home Bud-Bud, a Red-lored Amazon and several months later brought home Tina an African Grey. Though they loved Tina and Bud-Bud very much their hearts belonged to the macaws, so they continued to search for a rescue closer to home. This search resulted in a road trip to Bellingham, Washington to visit Mollywood Sanctuary. Betsy, owner of Mollywood and always on the lookout for volunteers, discovered Tracy lived on the Kitsap Peninsula where another of her volunteers lived. Betsy suggested that Tracy carpool to Mollywood with her volunteer Jocelyn. Tracy decided that it would be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about parrots, and began volunteering at Mollywood.
As time passed Tracy discovered her true passion was to help these magnificent, intelligent and beautiful birds find forever homes and to inform and educate the public about the enormous responsibility of bringing a parrot into their lives. Mike and Tracy’s love of one bird has grown into a love of MANY. They now provide a loving, nurturing home to for as many as 45 parrots, primarily macaws. Fidobird's Avian Rescue applied for 501 c 3 status in December of 2004 and was granted tax exempt status December 8, 2005. Originally, FARAE’s mission was to find forever homes for abandoned, abused, neglected or unwanted parrots, but over time Fidobird's Avian Resce has realized that the best thing for the parrots is to be with there own kind and be allowed to bond with each other. Realizing this Fidobird's Avian Rescue has focused there time and funds to establishing a permanent cage free environment for those parrots in their custody and educating the public on the huge responsibility having a parrot as a pet will be.
Mike and Tracy built a 500 square foot building at there home in Poulsbo in 2006 dedicated to the macaws where they are allowed to roam in a cage free environment. A 20’X 40’ flight attached to this building, allowed the macaws to go outdoors was completed in April 2007, a smaller flight for the African Grays, Amazons, and other smaller birds was completed later in 2007 .
In 2009 Mike & Tracy purchased a home in Shelton, Washington on 5 acres. The birds are now housed in a 950 sq. ft. two room building, which includes a food prep area, a medical station and storage for food, toys and medical supplies. A two permanet flights have been built with plans to expand these flights as money allows. . A small aviary was donated to Fidobird's Avian Rescue and has been set up the smaller bird’s can go outdoors directly from their indoor space. Plans to build a heated winter outside aviary are in the works.
