THE ALEX FOUNDATION

The goal of The Alex Foundation is to support research establishing the cognitive and communicative abilities of parrots as intelligent beings. These findings will be used to encourage the responsible ownership of parrots, conservation and preservation of parrots in the wild, and veterinary  research into the psychological diseases and care of these birds.”  

The Mission of the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC) is to raise awareness about the plight of parrots and other captive birds and to serve as an educational resource for the humane community, law-makers, and the general public.

Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council

PIJAC is a nonprofit, service-oriented organization comprised of Members who care about pets, the pet industry, and the environment. PIJAC's mission is to:  PROMOTE responsible pet ownership and animal welfare, FOSTER environmental stewardship & ENSURE the availability of pets. For more than 40 years, PIJAC has served its Members and mission through world-renowned advocacy, animal care programs and environmental stewardship campaigns. PIJAC Membership is open to pet enthusiasts, all segments of the pet industry, and organizations affiliated with companion animal ownership and welfare. 

WORLD PARROT TRUST

Nearly one-third of all parrot species are threatened in the wild. And millions of pet parrots share our lives and homes. As a leader in parrot conservation and welfare, the World Parrot Trust works with parrot enthusiasts, researchers, local communities and government leaders to encourage effective solutions that protect parrots. To do this, we focus on: Conducting and supporting field conservation projects, Working to eliminate the international trade in wild caught parrots and; Increasing awareness of the plight of parrots, in the wild and in captivity. 

Dr. Susan Friedman is a psychology professor at Utah State University who has pioneered the application of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to captive and companion animals. ABA, with its roots in human learning, offers a scientifically sound teaching technology and ethical standard that can improve the lives of all learners. Students from 22 different countries have participated in Susan's online courses, Living and Learning with Animals for Professionals and Living and Learning with Parrots for Caregivers. She has written chapters on learning and behavior for three veterinary texts (Behavior of Exotic Pets, Clinical Avian Medicine, and Manual of Parrot Behavior), and is a frequent contributor to popular magazines. Her articles appear around the world in eleven languages. Susan has presented seminars for a wide variety of professional organizations around the world such as the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, Moorpark College Exotic Animal Training and Management program, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She has been nominated for the Media Award given by the International Association of Behavior Analysis for her efforts to disseminate to pet owners, veterinarians, animal trainers and zookeepers the essential tools they need to empower and enrich the lives of the animals in their care.
